It's almost winter. It's time to accept this statement as fact and get ready for powdered streets, flying reindeer and the inevitable increase in your home heating bill. Don't lose hope though, here are some quick and easy tips to help you save on your energy bill this season.
1. Lock Windows
Ever noticed how windows and doors seem a little snugger when they're locked? This is because they're pressed tight against their weather stripping, insulating against airflow.
2. Fill Up.
Dishwashers are more energy and water efficient when full. They consistently do a better job—with less water—than hand-washing.
3. Clean Heat.
Take a few minutes every two months and clean your furnace filter. This can increase its efficiency up to 50%.
4. Use the Sun to Your Advantage
Those rays are free heat. Keep those blinds open during the day.
5. Dry Smart
Do two or more loads of laundry in a row to take advantage of an already warm dryer and unclog the filter after a load. A clogged filter increases consumption up to 30% (and is a fire hazard).
6. Upgrade Your Thermostat
Automated thermostats are affordable, easy to program and can save you up to 12% of your bill.
7. Keep Heating Registers Clear
This may seem like a no brainer, but it's something we've all done at one time or another. A blocked register won't heat anything.
8. LED holiday lights
LEDs are 75% more efficient and last 25 times longer than traditional lights. Enjoy the holidays without breaking the bank.
9. Unplug Electronics
Even when they're turned off your electronics are using power. If you're leaving the house for extended periods of time, make sure to pull the plug.
10. Adjust Blinds and Curtains
Finally, lower the blinds and curtains. Close your curtains and shades at night protects against cold drafts; opening them during the day to lets in warm sunlight.
Don't forget that you're going to be recycling air a lot more during these months then the summer. Remember the importance of products that value the air and add zero pollution to your home.
