Refresh Your Knowledge of How To Recycle

Recycling is simple, and yet so important. It only takes a couple of minutes of your day, and it has a massive impact on the environment! When you first start doing it, it can be a bit hard to remember where everything goes. We promise you it gets easier as you go!

It’s important to notice that every city has its own rules, and they normally have many available sources to help you. Be that online or by phone! Don’t be shy and do ask for help if you have any questions. You don’t want to make any mistakes!

FIRST THINGS FIRST

If you already recycle, you’re probably thinking “what else can I do?”. For us, it all starts at the grocery store! We are the consumers, and we have the power to choose what to buy.

Buying products that are recyclable will make your life easier! You’ll also be helping the environment by supporting companies that use packages that can be recycled. Another option is to buy products that have been made from recycled materials. You can tell if a product is recyclable/made from recycled materials by looking at the label in the package.

Avoid buying hazardous materials, as it is difficult to recycle packages that contain hazardous waste. You can try and find safer and less toxic alternatives to household cleaners and personal care products. All of AspenClean products are 100% natural, and our bottles are 100% recycled and recyclable! Not only that, but our dishwasher detergent pouch is also recyclable!

GETTING STARTED

Now that you know how to make smarter choices, you need to actually start making them! And for that, you will need recycle bins.

Most cities offer their standard recycle bins, and if they don’t you can always buy it at department stores or online. It’s important to have separate bins for paper, glass, aluminum and plastic. As each city has its own guidelines, you should try and follow it as best as you can.

COMPOST WASTE

Compost is decomposed organic material, such as leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen waste. It provides many essential nutrients for plant growth and therefore is often used as fertilizer.

Just like recycling, you send less material to the landfill when you compost. That helps the environment more than you would think! If the food gets to the landfill it generates methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times as potent as carbon dioxide in trapping heat within our atmosphere.

SEPARATING THE MATERIALS

By just sorting the items, you’re already making the job easier for your local collectors by decontaminating recyclable material. There are a lot of cheat sheets that you can print to help you with the separation of the materials. Your city’s website should have their own version, and if they don’t the internet is an amazing place to find this kind of information.

Some things are recyclable but are too big to go in bins. In this case, you might have the option to drop it off at a recycling center, or ask the city to pick it up.

LET IT GO

If you’re trying to get rid of something that is not recyclable or that is still in good condition, donate it! Many institutions accept donations of things that are not useful to you anymore.

You can donate your old cell phone to a local police station, or to a senior house for people who might need them in emergencies. You can also donate your clothes to a thrift store that helps institutions, or to a homeless shelter. Your old computer can be donated to schools, or institutions that build new computers. The options are broad and there are always people in need.
