The hidden chemical secrets of carpet cleaners

The hidden (chemical) secrets of carpet cleaners

Most homeowners are not aware of the toxic chemicals they introduce into their homes with carpet cleaning products. These products have been known to release dangerous fumes that create toxic environments, and for the likes of our children and furry friends who spend more time in contact with carpets at a closer range, the toxicity of these chemicals increases.

Such solvents are known to be damaging to humans' central nervous systems, causing nausea, dizziness and fatigue with warnings of possible kidney and liver damage. Chemicals in carpet cleaners evaporate and concentrate in the air causing air pollution, which is linked to irritation in people's eyes, nose and lungs aggravating respiratory problems and allergies. Studies also suggest that long-term exposure of certain chemicals can be linked to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Kawasaki Syndrome is also a rare illness that some scientists suggest may be triggered by the toxic chemicals in carpet cleaners.

HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR CARPETS CLEANING PRODUCTS ARE SAFE:

Always check your products ingredients, if the bottle doesn't list it's ingredients consider that as a red flag and check online before you purchase. Some chemicals to look out for when buying carpet cleaning products are:

  • Solvents: Butoxyethanol and other glycol ethers, Tetrachloroethylene, Perchloroethylene
  • Acids and other corrosive chemicals: Hydroxyacetic acid, Hydrofluoric acid, Nitrilotriacetic acid
  • Mildewcides and Disinfectants: Tributyl tin, Formaldehyde, Phenol
  • Other chemicals: Butane, propane and isobutanes (aerosol propellants), Dibutyl phthalate, Nonylphenol ethoxylate (surfactant), Octylphenol ethoxylate (surfactant)

Don't believe everything you read, if the product your buying says its "natural" or "green" always check for third-party certifications to verify how eco-friendly the product actually is. Some companies like to take advantage of the eco-friendly branding by advertising their product as environmentally friendly.
